Day 2 in Chicago started off with a big fat fail. We had no clean clothes and needed a laundromat asap. Little did we know that finding a laundromat in Chicago is like trying to find a straight man in Melbourne. So after hiking around the neighbourhood with our heavy washing bags we ditched the laundry bags and attempted to be tourists. Which we also failed at as we missed the trolley bus twice in a row.
We walked half the length of Chicago and saw:
The Agora Sculpture in Grant Park - torsos and legs with no head as the artist wanted people to think with their heart and not their heads. The artist was a friend of Robin Williams and he donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for it's installation. Grant Park is huuuuge and was designed by the same architect who designed Central Park
Buckingham Fountain - One of the largest fountains in the world. The fountain represents Lake Michigan with the 4 seahorses each representing a state bordering the lake (Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana)
Chicago skyline
Crown Fountain - 2 glass block towers each at the end of a reflecting pool (the pool was empty due to winter). Images of Chicago citizens are projected onto the towers.
We made our way down to Navy Pier - the biggest tourist attraction in Illinois (apparently). We were a bit disappointed as there was not a lot going on, we couldn't find charms for our bracelets anywhere and it smelt weird. There was a futuristic mcdonalds which we walked through to investigate but the only thing futurey about it was the plasma ball.
This is what the trolley bus we've been riding looks like:
After this we walked to the AMC movie theatre (where they hold movie premiers in Chicago) and saw Lincoln which was incredible. So cool to watch the movie after having just been in Washington and learning about all the history behind it. Also cool to wake up the next morning and watch the Academy Awards nominations to see that it has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards!
We went home via a delicious mexican restaurant and discovered that Chicago is very pretty at night.
