The day started with a frightful 'continental breakfast' at the Fairway Inn, including strange looking pastries that came out of a box, and a burping man.
Once sufficiently caffeinated, we hopped into lil'blue and began our venture south! It was a really pretty drive, surrounded by green waters and sandy beaches as we drove over the 32 bridges down to Key West.
As suggested by the Lonely Planet Guide and our tour guide Chris from the day before, Key Largo was a bit of a non-event. Nothing special, so we didn't make a stop.
Islamorada is where it started to get beautiful and exciting! We checked out the Theatre of the Sea, but it was going to cost like $150 for a Dolphin show... so we opted to photograph the fake ones outside (and the opossum in a cage at the front desk??) and continued on our journey.
A few snaps of gorgeousness from Islamorada down to Key West:
'Better than Sex' Dessert Restaurant we drove past.
In Key West we hit the visitor center who directed us to the main street and all the attractions to check out along with some discount vouchers to assist with our tight budget!
Had a delicious lunch at The Grand - this really cool restaurant in an old house that has been converted. Lunch came with a free Key Lime Pie for dessert. ... (when in rome)... YUM!
We wandered around a bit and found the Little White house where President Harry Truman served his term (quite fitting as it is Inauguration Weekend over here, with Obama's Second Inauguration Ball being tomorrow night) and saw Hemmingway's House as well.
Various pics from around Key West:
We kept walking and got to Mile 0 - its the beginning of US 1, and official marker for 90 miles to Cuba!
A little further down the road we got to the Southernmost Point of the United States! The water was amazing, and there's a really cute little beach and cafe there too.
With the day drawing to a close we jumped back into lil'blue and drove back up to Marathon where we are spending the night (half way between Key Largo & Key West)
After checking into the hotel we went for a stroll along the beach, caught the end of a beautiful sunset and dipped our toes in the North Atlantic Sea.
